Beer Walk

Saddleworth Round Table, who have organised the legendary Beer Walk for 38 years, have sadly decided to call off the event after issues surrounding last year’s walk. They made this heartbreaking decision after they were told they would have to take full responsibility for volunteer marshals and factor in police costs linked to clean-up charges and traffic management. Problems with the Beer Walk have been further exacerbated by rogue hangers-on who simply use the event to fund personal drinking sprees.

FutureEverything Festival

FutureEverything are looking for brass players for an exciting mass participation project taking place at Salford Quays, 4.30pm on Saturday 19th May 2012 (plus one or two workshops, TBA).

SuperCriticalMass is a sonic-arts project run by two Australian artists, Luke Jaaniste and Julian Day. FutureEverything are delighted to announce, in collaboration with the Salford Quays Partnership, Looping The Loop Festival and Sound And Music, that SuperCriticalMass will be undertaking a two-week residency in Manchester as part of the FutureEverything Festival (16th - 19th May 2012).

We are looking to recruit a large group of brass players for this exciting opportunity, which will involve participants working with the artists in one or two workshops, prior to a final performance at the high-profile Looping The Loop Festival - the launch of the Cultural Olympiad in the North West. The artists work to remove 'traditional' barriers to entry - so we are looking for anyone with an interest in playing brass, whether you are a beginner or a professional, student or anything in between. There is no score, no sheet music, and no notation to learn, no music stands or traditional conductors. Instead, the artists build pieces of sound-art based around movement and verbal directions. So, you may be asked to play a certain note for as long as you can, whilst walking to a particular point, rather than having to learn a piece of music, it is written around you! The final performance will be 'flash-mob' style, out-door and aims to attract attention from everyone at the festival to move over to the waterside by the Lowry Theatre, and will play an integral part in the finale!

All ages and levels welcome!

Tribute to Goff Richards

Shortly before Goff Richards passed away last year he contacted Aaron Harvey, Musical Director of the St Austell Town Band and requested that on their next visit to Uppermill they play William Moyles march "Cornish Cavalier" to the international audience that regularly attends the Whit Friday March Contests.

Goff adjudicated at Uppermill for 16 years and five years ago when his illness began to take its toll he asked his good friend David Marshall to take over his role. David accepted and has adjudicated at Uppermill as a result of the great respect that he had for Goff as a wonderful musician and as a very special friend. The St Austell Town Band for many years were very close to Goff and to this date still have many of his hand written works within their library.

On Friday 1st June at 3:45pm at Uppermill, the St Austell Town Band conducted by both Aaron Harvey and David Marshall will perform a short tribute to Goff Richards before the commencement of the contest. They will play Cornish Cavalier and the second movement from Goffs recently discovered test piece 'A Cornish Festival' entitled Munion.
